‘Nuff time has passed with rain beating on our window panes, the sun is shining today and it is pretty hot! Grab the sunshine while it’s here, it’s time to ‘Summer-up’ your wardrobe.
Different body shapes need different dress styles and this is my express edit of the best dresses on the Highstreet now to suit all shapes. Hourglass should ideally choose fitted styles that skim curves and avoid anything shapeless, tea dresses are great for that. Pear shapes look great in fit and flare style dresses, fitted on the top to show your smallest part and flared over your curves on the bottom. Apple shapes look good in shorter length loose shifts with lots of pattern all over.
Maxi and Midi Dresses
A full length maxi is marvellous if you like to waft around or go for a trendy midi to show a bit of leg.
If you are shorter in stature then the rule is generally short = short so a mini skirt or above the knee works. If you want a maxi or a midi dress go sheer and choose styles with a split on the leg to break up the expanse of material which can drown petite and shorter people.
This &Other Stories Dress is utterly gorgeous and it would work on taller pear shapes. I spotted it last week whilst on a shopping trip with a client, she bought it for her up-coming holiday to France for some pool-side glam. It’s hard to see the detail in this photo but the top bodice is pleated and it’s empire line which is flattering on lots of people. It would look great in the day with rose gold Birkenstock’s or these 70’s style block heel sandals from Office for dinner with a leopard print clutch to finish-off.
This pretty maxi dress is for the more romantic and feminine dressers amongst us. It’s nice that there’s a little bit of sleeve to cover the tops of arms so you don’t feel too exposed or too covered up either.
Another winning maxi dress from &Other Stories. This embroidered maxi is nice and relaxed and would look good on a curvy figure or a indeed straight one too. Wear it with neutral sandals or white to pick up the white in the waistband.
This palm print midi length dress from Topshop is a perfect Summer holiday number. The material is jacquard so it looks expensive but is only £95. This green would look good on brunettes, blondes and redheads and you could wear it with gold or silver shoes for evening. Gorgeous!
Silky Little Number
Moving on from the Maxi and Midi, it’s been all about the slip dress this year. Now I’m knocking on a bit :), I don’t always feel that comfortable in a spaghetti strap, as is the style of a true slip dress, so this is a brilliant alternative and gives the same kind of vibe. Despite now being the wrong side of 40, I would wear this dress with trainers or high-top converse to mix it up a bit. It can easily be worn with boots or strappy shoes too and would look pretty damn cool and sexy.
Apple Shape Shifters
If you have an apple shaped body you are likely to have a larger tum, big boobs and your legs will be a great feature. The worst kind of dress for your body shape is anything with waist detail because it draws attention to your middle area. If you go for a shift style dress like this one from Anthropologie with lots of pattern, it tricks the eye and the focal point will actually be your slim legs. Another option is to go for this graphite print shift from &Other Stories. Add a big chunky statement necklace with a pop of colour like this stunner from Anthropolgie and some great shoes so you have two focal points, the necklace and your legs, detracting from your tum.
This neon leopard print dress by Suncoo from Anthology Boutique is the epitome of easy glamour in my book. This would work well on a pear shape body as well as hourglass and straight.
Size 14 and Up
Most high street stores now go up to at least a 16 but there are specialist lines out there that cut for girls with curves. Mango’s Violetta line is my favourite, they have stylish, reasonably priced clothes and a great line of dresses. These two below are very wearable for day-to-day. The denim one could be kept simple or dressed-up with a bold statement necklace like the one above from Anthropologie. This chiffon dress is a bit dressier for lunches or Summer BBQ’s.
It’s so exciting Summer seems to finally be here after weeks of rain. I definitely feel ready to get the Summer dresses out so I hope you like my choices.
