Well this is it folks - we are about to let the curtain fall on 2021. A year that began with a covid lockdown and has ended under its shadow still. But let’s not let that get us down! It’s time to dress up and party and see in a brand new year. That is the great thing about clothes - they can absolutely lift your spirits and get you in a good mood.

I did a little end of year podcast with two fellow stylists and we talked a lot about how what you wear can change your mood. You can listen to my podcast here.

I’ve pulled together three outfit ideas that are my all-time faves and work for going out (although who IS this year) or having a kitchen disco with friends like me.

I’ve noticed a couple of trends popping up over this particular Christmas. Influencers on Instagram have been wearing feather trimmed pajama satin trousers with matching tops! Very louche and quite 1920’s decadent actually. I love this trend, it’s like lockdown dressing on acid - most importantly, it’s a bit ‘extra’ which is what you need this time of year. It’s time to pull out the stops and be a little more daring. That said though personally I wouldn’t wear the top AND the trousers. I would wear these trousers with a cashmere knit or maybe a tee shirt like this from Disko kids.

These below from Kitri are a lovely combination of pink and red.

I’ve also noticed bodysuits are everywhere which may fill you with horror! I’ve really warmed to the idea of these lately though - you don’t have the problem of bulk when tucking tops in. If you are wearing a voluminous skirt then it gives a really lovely sillhouette and works with wide trousers really well too - both wide trousers and voluminous skirts have been a trend staple of 2021 that look set to continue into 2022. Have a look at River Island’s great selection of bodysuits here.

If you read my blog or listen to my podcast (listen here) then you’ll know I’m a bit fan or tulle skirts. They are a bit Sarah Jessica Parker in the 90’s but they’ve made a comeback and when work with chunky boots (another current HUGE trend) they look super cool and very feminine too.

All these observations have inspired my next look which is a tulle skirt work with a body and chunky boots. if you don’t fancy wearing the body suit, then wear the tulle skirt with a smart black blazer - a tuxedo style would be great, and a fitted tee shirt underneath. Ankle boots or longer boots would also work if chunky boots are not your style.

Or if you’d like to crank it up a notch further for NYE - I also love this look from the fabulous Turquoise Flamingo. I have included this awesome sequin and feather skirt on my blog before - it’s from ASOS Editions range.

Having a black blazer in your wardrobe really helps to tone things down (skirts above) or to dress up jeans and help you look pulled together.

South of the River Boutique does great tulle skirts. I also love Needle and Thread for tulle, sequins and glam.

My third and final outfit idea for NYE is a classic pair of black skinny jeans, sparkly boots and a SUPER glam or voluminous top. If you don’t have sparkly boots then wear a long pair over your jeans. This is a trend that was dead for a while but we’ve been having a 70’s revival so it’s definitely an up-to-date look.

You could end up looking boring wearing jeans and a nice top, so I fully recommend going all out on the top with this look. Stine Goya is a great brand to find this kind of thing. Net a Porter has a great range including this gorgeous lilac velvet top - very glamourous! Another idea is to go for a sequin suit jacket/blazer - this green one from River Island would work very nicely. 💚

Zara always have great boots - I love both the sparkly below and these heeled leather boots to wear over jeans from the current season.

I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Lisa x
